What you should know about Craft Malt
August 26, 2022
You know craft beer, now we bring you a discussion of craft malt. Craft malt is the complement to craft beer in the world of brewers malts, which make up the base of most all the beer we commonly drink.
As in brewers of beer, some malt producers are huge, international operations that manufacture their product on very large scale. Craft malt, on the other hand, comes from small maltsters who source their grains mostly from small farms in their local regions. Craft malt is all about locally-regionally sourced grains malted by independent malt houses.

On this episode of West Virginia Beer Roads we learn about craft malt and what it means to the craft brewing industry. Erin and Charles interview Brent Manning, co-founder of Riverbend Malt House in Asheville. Riverbend is the shining star of small, independent malting operations in our region of the country. Along with Brent, we also hear from Weathered Ground Brewery’s Sam Fonda, who uses craft malt for approximately 80 percent of his grain bill in making beautiful hand-crafted beers in southern West Virginia.
