Best Beer Bets 8-28-20

Following are our best bets for your beer drinking pleasure this weekend and the upcoming week in West Virginia.

Abolitionist Ale Works • Charles Town

Brevis & Bretthead is a newly-released hoppy sour ale conditioned with orange zest and generously dry hopped. The kind of creation they handle so well. 4.6% ABV. Draft only. Available at the brewery.

Also at the brewery, check out the West Funkin Virginia Variety Packs. Four different 16-oz. cans of funky goodness. $20

Big Timber Brewing • Elkins

The brand new Cherry Vanilla Gose has hit the taproom. A 30-barrel batch of their base gose was flavored with 400 pounds of tart cherry fruit and 2 lbs of vanilla beans. A little lactose was added for a creamier mouthfeel. In 16-oz. cans. Available at brewery now and soon in limited distribution to craft specialty outlets.

Overgrowth is another exciting Big Timber newbie. A big, hazy IPA at 10% ABV, it’s hop addition menu is something from your dreams. Azacca and Warrior in the boil; Citra and Mosaic in the whirlpool, with El Dorado in the hop back. Then, dry hopped with loads of Citra, Zappa, and El Dorado.  Over 10 pounds of hops per barrel.  Aroma/Taste is red berries, bright orange, and vanilla.  Available in their Elkins taproom at $18 per 4-pack of 16-oz. cans. A tiny bit may hit distro.

Screech Owl Brewing • Cuzzart

Wild & Wonderful Strawberry Ale in 16-oz. cans hit distribution in the Morgantown area two weeks ago, and it’s quite a hit. A mellow base brew with the delicious aroma of strawberry. 6.2% ABV. (Untappd 3.67) The brewery is also now canning its Bold Blonde Ale, Hoo’s Your Daddy IPA, and Threshing Floor Wheat. Available at the brewery and in limited distribution.

The Peddler • Huntington

Yottadoo is a new sour ale flavored with grapefruit and tangerine. This is a style the brewery seems to have mastered this summer. Citrusy, light and refreshing. We love the creativity. 5.4% ABV. (Untappd 4.13) Draft only. Available at the brewery in crowlers to-go.

Weathered Ground Brewery • Cool Ridge

16 Shots in Munich is back for another run. This German-style Pils is the real deal. All German malt. Floral, herbal hops. Beer Geek approved. 5.4% ABV in 16-oz. cans. (Untappd 3.95) Available at the brewery and in limited distribution.

“When Stumptown Ales gets their hands on Galaxy hops what do they make? Well Holy Galaxy of course! The newest beer in the single hop “Holy” series will be available in cans and on draft for the Labor Day weekend at their brewery in Davis. Based on the same recipe as the popular Holy Citra DIPA, Holy Galaxy will deliver an intense citrus and tropical passion fruit flavor with the same smooth malt bill and yeast culture you know from others in the “Holy” series.”
