Charleston Nano Brewery Craft Malt Flight
September 2, 2026
This September, stop in Charleston Nano Brewery and ask about their special Craft Malt Flight. Learn about the differences craft malts make in a beer.

Here’s the list of the individual beers recommended for the flight, with descriptive notes provided by Kenny Graley, head brewer.
Elktoberfest – This strong (7% ABV) non-traditional autumn ale brings flavors more typical of a dark German Wheat Beer. The malts produce big caramel-ish, toasted flavors The yeast strain from Weihenstephan contributes flavors of banana and clove. Its bright amber color steps up perfectly as a friend to autumn. Composed of 100% craft malts from ND Malting, Williston, ND, which include 61% Vienna, 28% Pale 8% Light Munich and 3% Crystal 60.
1788 Pils — This Czech-tyle Pilsner is clean, dry, with moderate bitterness and a floral nose. The beer is 97% Carolina Pils from Carolina Malt House in Cleveland, NC.
Turtle Smash – A special fall seasonal brew made with 100% ND Malting pale malt. This Pale Ale is clean, light, and floral. Gets its extra special local character from its use of WV-grown Cascade hops from Turtle on a Post hop farm.
West Side IPA – Brewed with 95% Carolina Gold malt from Carolina Malt House. This ale excels in richer maltiness and hoppiness to fall more into the traditional West Coast-style IPA category.
Of course, you can just purchase a pint of any one of the beers if you don’t want a flight.

A WORD FROM KENNY GRALEY, CHARLESTON NANO’S HEAD BREWER, ON BREWING WITH CRAFT MALT
KENNY GRALEY, CHARLESTON NANO Brewery
———-
We love the unique flavor that goes with the terrior of the local area where the grains are grown. A lot of it too is about using something local and letting people know that it’s local.
A lot of people come in and ask questions about our beer, and we enjoy explaining ingredients to them. Like about a craft maltster and the fact that they do different smaller batches that they can control individually.
The craft malts are very fresh when I get them in. Some will have a very bready aroma and flavor and the kilned malts fill the brewery with a real toasty, crunchy kind of aroma.
Whenever a load of fresh malts are delivered to the brewery, it smells like a bread factory back there.
