Say hello to Holler Nectar pawpaw sour

If you’ve followed us through the years, you know we love our pawpaw beers. The pawpaw is a strange fruit with a strange taste. It’s the only native fruit in the eastern part of America that has a distinct tropical flavor. Think banana, mango.

The folks at Weathered Ground Brewery in Cool Ridge, WV, spent a week this fall processing pawpaw fruit that was provided by their friend, Evan Scott. Quite an arduous task, pulping those pawpaws. For anyone who has messed around with ripe pawpaws, you know it’s a tedious process to, by hand, remove the gooey pulp from the seeds and skin. It’s slow and messy.

Say hello to Holler Nectar

Now, from the fruits of Weathered Ground’s labor, securing 75 lbs. of pulp, comes a delicious beer called Holler Nectar Pawpaw Sour Ale. A most appropriate name it is. The beer was soured naturally by lactobacillus, which was introduced with the yeast for fermentation.

The brewery describes Holler Nectar as a bright and tangy sour ale conditioned with local pawpaw fruit.

They wrote: “We spent a week peeling, plucking, and scooping every bit of that tropical banana-mango goodness to create this one-of-a-kind re-ferment — and then did it all over again for a cold condition. The result? A refreshingly tart, fruity delight that captures a taste of Appalachia in every sip. This one really is a tart treat, y’all!”

Share some blissful autumn blessings by tipping a glass of Holler Nectar while you can. Look for it on draft at popular craft beer taps in Charleston, Huntington, and Beckley areas. Or just make a visit over to the brewery in Cool Ridge. From the description provided, it promises to be worth the trip.
