Screech Owl earns two honey beer medals

Another national Honey Beer Competition has come and gone, but not without Screech Owl Brewing taking home two medals. The popular West Virginia brewery scored both a Silver and a Bronze in the Stout/Porter category.

Buckwheat Honey Porter is made with toasted malts, yeast, and local buckwheat honey. Its taste features a soft toasty maltiness with a touch of spice and floral qualities at 4.5% ABV.

Roger Johnson, Screech Owl’s founder and co-owner, said he was very pleased with the medals. He also reminds people that the brewery is celebrating its 10th Anniversary throughout 2025, and it has some special anniversary merchandise available at the brewery. They are also holding farmers markets at the brewery on the fourth Saturday of each month.

Another Appalachian region brewery also medals

Screech Owl, which has also medaled in past Honey Beer Competitions, faced tough competition in the stout/porter category this year from another Appalachian region brewery in Jackie O’s Brewery of Athens, Ohio. The Jackie O’s beer, Love Handles Milk Stout, took the category Gold and also won the Bronze medal for Best of Show in the overall competition that had over 200 entries.

The Honey Beer Competition is program of the National Honey Board and was judged by BJCP certified judges and featured 12 beer style categories, a cider, hard seltzer and design category. The submitted beers were judged on their aroma, appearance, flavor, mouthfeel and the role honey played in the beer.
