Beer’s been slushie-fied

Pouring a beer slushie
Kenny “Candyman” Graley, brewer at Charleston Nano Brewery, pours a beer slushie.

“Nowhere else but at Charleston Nano Brewery.”
That’s the answer to the question, “Where can I get a beer slushie flavored with Skittles?”

If you haven’t thought of that question, maybe you should. With warm weather on the way, a beer slushie sure sounds good.

The Candyman strikes again

Brewery co-owner and head brewer, Kenny “Candyman” Graley, has built a quite a reputation for brewing candy-flavored beers. He’s taken his light flavored base beer and flavored it with popular candies such as Skittles, Nerds, Sour Patch Kids, and Jolly Ranchers. The most popular one, his Skittles Skillz Sour, has developed a passionate fan base over the past year.

Sit at the Nano bar for a while and watch people stopping by to get their growlers filled with the Skittles Skillz Sour. Hang out around the Nano booth at a beer festival and watch attendees coming back for seconds and thirds of Kenny’s candy-flavored sours. It’s quite a phenomena.

Getting Slushie

Now, Kenny has put his popular Skittles Skillz Sour into a slushie machine and turned the beer into a delicious icy treat.

Whether you call it a slushie, a slushee, a slurpee, or an icee — you’ll call it delicious.

The coldest beer in town

Nano Brewery customer Lora Reynolds shows her frozen Skittles Skillz Sour Slushie, served with a straw.

Nano Brewery customer Lora Reynolds, who operates the Cups & Cats Cafe in downtown Charleston, is a fan. She stopped into the Nano this week to try the new frozen beverage.

“It’s a beer that’s okay to drink through a straw,” she says with a smile, and added that the slushie is a balance of tart and sweet with a fresh fruity flavor.

We agree.

Not normally a beer fan, try this

We think it’s a beer innovation that will appeal to many who don’t think they like beer. Does it taste like a normal beer? No, it doesn’t. In the slushie version there is not really any bitterness or grainy flavor. It’s a frozen drink with a lightly tart, fruity taste. Definitely summer friendly.

While it may taste totally different from a regular beer, it is still an adults-only alcoholic beverage. The Skittles Skillz Sour slushie is 6.5% alcohol by volume. Nano sells their slushies in a 13 oz. glass for $7.50.

We’ve been slushie-fied.
