Charleston Nano puts candy in beer

An unexpected brewing direction is bringing some sweet business success to a local small brewery. Charleston Nano Brewery finds its candy flavored beers are attracting an enthusiastic new clientele to their Elk City neighborhood taproom.

Kenny Graley has found success with candy flavored beer.

Candy in beer, sweeeeet.

According to brewery proprietor Kenny Graley, it’s not just the IPAs and Pilsners that are ringing the taproom cash register these days. It’s Nerds, Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, and Jolly Rancher flavored brews that act as magnets to younger generations of adults who grew up loving these sweet & tart candies. Putting them into his beer surely makes Graley the Candy Man of Elk City.

Maybe surprisingly, these candy beers are not overly sweet, but are balanced by the tart beer recipe. They preserve the attractive flavors of the candy without being cloying or overpowering. They definitely appeal to a crowd who, before, didn’t think they liked beer. But a Skittles sour brew brings smiles to their faces.

The West Virginia Beer Roads crew dropped in to talk with Graley about his overall buiness at Charleston Nano and got the inside scoop on his popular candy beers, as well as on many other aspects of this two-year-old establishment.

The Nano’s Kenny Graley (center) gets pressed for answers between Erin and Charles on Episode 091 of WV Beer Roads.
