Catching up with Ross at Bad Shepherd

Since the location opened as Charleston Brewing Company in 2013, and then transitioned to new ownership in 2016 as Bad Shepherd Beer Company, this brewery has been a staple in downtown Charleston, West Virginia. When it opened, it was Charleston’s first new brewery since the mid-1990s. And throughout most of its first decade, as the only brewery on its block, it introduced thousands of folks to the beauty of locally made, fresh craft beer.

Today things are rapidly changing. This past year, for the first time, Bad Shepherd picked up some strong competition on its downtown block with the opening of Fife Street Brewing and a new remote taproom for Short Story Brewing, which is a popular West Virginia brewery based in the Fairmont area.

These developments are changing the face of craft beer in downtown Charleston.
