Podcast with Fife Street Brewing owners
June 17, 2022
The West Virginia Beer Roads crew met with Lisa and Derek Godwin, two of the founding owners of the new Fife Street Brewing in downtown Charleston. We got their read on what it’s like to open a hot, new small brewery in a city desperate for more local beer.
Three weeks in and they are selling beer faster than they can make it — you can’t say that’s a totally bad situation. The brews are getting great reviews, the crowds are filling the space indoors and out. The excitement is palpable. Listen in as Lisa and Derek provide a look at the inner workings of a small brewery business and give some insights on the joys and challenges brewery ownership.

Number Two took a while
It seems like a century ago when the city’s first brewpub, Charleston Brewing Company (now Bad Shepherd Beer Co.), opened on Quarrier Street in 2013. That was a glorious day. Craft beer was booming nationally; hundreds of small breweries were opening around the nation about every month. We were sure Charleston Brewing would soon be followed by many more breweries here. No one could have guessed then that it would take nine years to get brewery number two.
Let’s celebrate local beer and the entrepreneurs and investors who organize and operate our local breweries. They are rare jewels indeed.
Now that Fife Street Brewing is here and doing well, we’ll have to turn our focus to Number Three.
