Lager of Love doing good works for Berkeley Springs

You don’t have to be a giant brewery to make a positive impact on your community and your society. Good works by our local small breweries are exploding across West Virginia. From time to time Brilliant Stream will highlight one of those breweries’ efforts.

Today, we turn our attention to Berkeley Springs Brewing Company (BSBC) of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, and its Lager of Love.

Lager of Love for charity

Denise and Karl Wagenbrenner, proprietors of BSBC, are putting their focus on single-hopped lagers for a rotating fundraiser effort. Called Lager of Love, the effort will benefit a variety of charities over the coming months.

“We have often asked ourselves how we could give back in a charitable way while we are still relatively struggling to recover from the pandemic setbacks,” wrote Denise. “We will be brewing small batches of a single hopped lager, and each batch will target and fundraise through round up donations in our tap room and $1 per pint sales.”

Monthly lager releases

The first batch released in May was brewed with Emerald Spire hops and benefits the Stache Strong WV program, which focuses on brain cancer research. Denise says brain cancer research is a cause very close to them. “Our very first investor and dear friend, Stan Oaks lost his wife to glioblastoma just prior to us meeting him about 10 yrs ago. The craft beer community is known for creating alliances, and we are very proud to find a way to give back.”

The May beer is single dry-hopped, light and refreshing with just a little haze from the dry hop addition. The June lager, which will be a seven-barrel batch, will feature Gemini hops and benefit the Morgan County Humane Society. July is yet to be determined. Each month, they will post the beneficiary charity/effort when the beer is released.

The May beer was brewed in collaboration with Homaide Brewing of Williamsport Maryland, where former BSBC brewery, Lucas Pinyan, now works.

Brilliant Stream commends Karl and Denise for leading this fundraising series in their community. West Virginia breweries rock.
