Summit Beer Station turns Six

There is no better party for West Virginia beer than the one Summit throws annually in Huntington. A big crowd of craft beer fans had a great time as Summit Beer Station celebrated its 6th anniversary yesterday.

As usual, Summit proprietor Jeff McKay outdid himself with his special lineup of unique collaboration brews and a few other very wonderful beers that you may not find anywhere else in West Virginia.

This year’s Summit Beer Station collaborations with West Virginia breweries were a lot of fun. Jeff McKay works up a beer recipe with each of the participating breweries and then travels to the brewery to assist with the brew day. Here are this year’s six collabs:

  • Weathered Ground – 16 Shots in Munich German-Style Pilsner: Brewed with Tettnang hops with all German malts;
  • The Peddler – Cardi C Sour IPA: Brewed with carrots, cardamom, lactose, and vanilla with some ingredients provided by Tulsi At The Market health food store;
  • Bad Shepherd – Def Saison: Split batch of saison with Huell Blanc hops. Half of the batch will go through a secondary fermentation with Brett C.
  • Big Timber – Lunar Pastry Stout: Moon Pie inspired imperial stout with chocolate, lactose, cinnamon, and vanilla
  • Stumptown – Boston Kangaroo IPA: Imperial New England IPA with Vic Secret, Topaz, and Enigma hops
  • Abolitionist Ale Works – Summit Berry Station Gose: A beer made with raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries aged in gin barrels.

Besides at Summit, most of the collaboration brews will be available at the partnering brewery taprooms and maybe at a few other places too. While they last, Summit is offering each for growler fills.

The event drew a lot of beer industry people including these folks. From L to R are: Jake Dempsey of Bad Shepherd Beer Company, Sam Fonda of Weathered Ground Brewing, David Lieving of the Huntington Area Development Corporation, Josh Holland of Country Boy Brewing, Jay Fox of The Peddler Brewpub, and Bobby Bowling of Weathered Ground Brewing.

Beside the West Virginia beers, Summit had some stellar American sours and Belgian beers that you rarely see on tap anywhere. For example, McKay secured kegs of Westmalle Trappist Dubbel, New Belgium’s Apple Whiskey Barrel Aged Felix, Cascade Brewing’s One Way or Another (2017), and Cascade’s Sang Roughe (2015).

Cheers to Jeff McKay and all the Summit staff for producing another super anniversary event. West Virginia ben fans hope wish many, many more.
