Harpers Ferry Brewing to open in Virginia

A new Virginia brewery will soon open just a short distance across the state line from Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Harpers Ferry Brewing expects to open its doors September 27 on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River.

As can be seen in this photo posted on Harpers Ferry Brewing’s Facebook page, the brewery has a great view of the Potomac River and the town of Harpers Ferry (at left).

The project is organized by the folks at Old 690 Brewing Company, a farm brewery in nearby Purcellville, Virginia. Old 690 co-owner Darren Gryniuk managed the development of the new project. Old 690 co-owner Ronda Powell serves as Harper Ferry Brewing’s managing partner.

Equipped and brewing

The new brewery is equipped with a 15-barrel brewhouse and plenty of fermentation space. It will keg all its beer and sell only through its taproom. The brewery does not plan to distribute beer to other bars or retailers. Eric Zupko will serve as head brewer. Zupko moves over from Old 690, where he has been brewing for the past couple of years.

In August, the first brew was put in the tank at Harpers Ferry Brewing: a Pawpaw Wheat ale. Following that, Zupko added a Pina Colada Berliner Weisse and a West Coast-style IPA. More beer is actively brewing as they get ready for the planned opening.

The brewery taproom will serve pints and flights and fill crowlers/growlers from their 20-tap draft system. They will have at least eight beers on tap when they open. Here are five of them:

• Kölsch
• Session IPA
• The Needles IPA
• Passionfruit Gose
• By-pass Porter

Once they get them all brewed, here are some other beers they initially expect to offer:

• Dubbel
• Brut IPA
• NE Wheat
• Pawpaw Wheat
• Pina Colada Berliner Weisse
• Pumpkin Ale
• White Stout

The food service should be similar to that at Old 690 with light fare augmented by food trucks. At opening, the operation will employ two full-time and 15 part-time people. The project represents a new investment of approximately $1 million.

LOCATION

The brewery is located just up the hill off highway U.S. 340, about 2 miles east of the town of Harpers Ferry. It sits across from Harpers Ferry Adventure Center at:

37412 Adventure Center Lane
Purcellville, Virginia (address for GPS)
