WV brewing industry hits economic development conference
September 22, 2017
One hundred fifty West Virginia economic development professionals will learn how they can better assist local brewing businesses during a meeting at The Resort at Glade Springs next week.
Representatives of three West Virginia breweries will be joining me for a presentation at the West Virginia Economic Development Council (WVEDC) annual conference on Monday, September 25. Participating in the presentation will be Sam Mauzy of Big Timber Brewing Company, Elkins, who is also president of the WV Craft Brewers Guild; Nathan Herrold, Bridge Brew Works, Fayetteville; and Sam Fonda, Weathered Ground Brewery, Cool Ridge.
Sam Fonda will talk about his experience of coming in from out-of-state to build a new brewery in WV.
Nathan Herrold will discuss his brewery’s situation of being an established brewery that is developing plans to expand their facility.
Sam Mauzy will discuss his brewery’s major expansion project that is currently well underway and also provide highlights on the most pressing needs of the brewing industry in the state.
To back up these talented representatives of the industry, I will open the presentation with a status update on the business of craft brewing in the U.S. and provide a little WV brewery history.
Our presentation will take place at the conference’s Monday evening dinner. Following dinner, we will continue the discussion while we sample some West Virginia beers in the hospitality room. It should be a good way to better inform the economic development community on the current needs of the state’s craft brewing industry and on how they can help it grow.
The annual WVEDC conference brings together people who work full-time in WV business development efforts for units of state and local governments, private sector businesses, and non-profit institutions. This year the conference is hosted by the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority, which is headquartered in Beckley.

September 22, 2017 at 1:49 pmWhat changes to existing laws do you think would provide the most help to the craft brewing industry in this state? As a consumer, I would like to see the ABV cap moved much higher or removed and the limits on growler fills to be lifted. It’s also annoying that I can only get 32 or 64 oz growlers filled. I have several 750 ml swing top growlers that I cant use.
I greatly appreciate the work that you do in telling the story of the WV craft beer industry. It is very much needed.
