WV fall beer festival outlook flavorful
August 2, 2016
The outlook for the WV fall beer festival season is definitely flavorful. I say this even though we lost the 20-year stalwart Bramwell Oktoberfest this year. But look around—autumn brew festivals are scheduled from Bluefield to Morgantown and Charleston to Charles Town.
Offering to fill the void left by Bramwell’s exit are two new festivals. Bluefield’s Oktoberfest in the Park and the Pipestem Oktoberfest both take place in southern West Virginia on Oct. 8. If a visit to Morgantown suits you, try the Home Run & Hops Craft Beer Festival, Sept. 24, at the baseball park home of the WV Black Bears.
If history is your thing, check out the Happy Retreat festival’s connection to George Washington’s brother in Charles Town (Sept. 10). For a downtown street fair extraordinaire, try OktoberWest on Charleston’s West Side (Oct. 15).
Most festivals on our list will include lots of West Virginia breweries as well as other excellent craft beer. This year, the growing WV brewery scene has contributed new excitement to our beer festivals. The strong showing made by spring and summer beer festivals proved that there is an extremely strong demand for local beer.
More brands than ever at a WV fall beer festival
Having finally added long-time-holdouts New Belgium and Bell’s breweries to the sold-in-WV list this year, beer festivals can now offer most of the top-selling national and regional craft brands. It wasn’t this way just a few years back.
Today, there’s a ton of great beer available in WV and beer festivals are benefiting and proliferating. Attending a festival is a great way to sample new products and discover the ones that put some zing in your palate.
