High Ground Brewing will soon be under construction in Terra Alta, WV. Situated in eastern Preston County midway between Kingwood and Oakland, Maryland, it is West Virginia’s fifth new brewery project with a chance to open in 2018.
Last Saturday’s Cabin Fever Craft Beer Fest in Morgantown was not a festival dominated by large national or regional craft beer breweries. In fact, they were non-existent. How impressive it was that over 1,500 people came out to support an event solely focused on West Virginia’s local breweries. That’s a testament to the maturing West Virginia beer scene. Our newly published West Virginia Distillery Directory shows the state has 16 licensed distilleries at the beginning of the new license year. The license year for distilleries begins January 1, instead of the July 1 fiscal year license that applies to breweries and wineries.
It looks like around five new WV breweries are poised to join our brewing community in 2018. They include Walton Mountain Brewing Company, Walton; Big Spruce Brewing, Snowshoe; Cheat Canyon Brewing, Morgantown; High Ground, Terra Alta; and Rambling Root in Fairmont.
