Fife Street Brewing

Four partners have come together to announce a significant new brewery project in Charleston. Called Fife Street Brewing, it will be the second brewery in downtown Charleston. It will be an upscale brewery taproom with a light food menu. Popular craft beer styles in draft and cans. Located less than a block from Bad Shepherd Beer Co. making a little brewery district.

North Branch Brewing
NOW OPEN FOR BUSINESS
This brewery will start small and hope to grow. Developed by Terry Stephens, it will begin as a one-barrel operation supporting its own pub. Pub will feature a nice menu of sandwiches and pub grub. Same owner and adjacent to North Branch Craft Pub.

Clendenin Brewing
NOW OPEN FOR BUSINESS
This is a project being developed by Matt and Nikki Holbert, who are best known as owners of Bricks & Barrels restaurant in Charleston. They are establishing a small brewery on the first floor of the former Chase Bank building they own in Clendenin. They have already put in an airbnb operation on the second floor. The building, with its impressive facade, was constructed in 1923 and sits along the Elk River in the Historic District of the city. Once the brewery is in operation, they would hope to have enough beer to self distribute a bit to the Charleston market.
A new business spark has lit up in Clendenin recently with the development of kayaking on the Elk and the new Elk River Rail Trail both brining people to the area. The Holberts have done an outstanding job selling West Virgina craft beer at Bricks and Barrels and their Axes & Ales restaurant/bar in Charleston. No doubt they will put together a tasty and fun operation in Clendinin that will help propel the area to even greater things.

Charleston Nano-Brewery

Kenny and Jennifer Graley are moving ahead with a small brewery and taproom project in Charleston’s Elk City district. The city has approved the zoning change needed. The building lease has been agreed. Final remodeling and brewery set-up is underway. Working on obtaining final state and city brewery operation permits. They plans to start off with a one-barrel brewhouse and 10 barrels of fermentation space. The roughly 5,000 sq. ft. building will have the taproom in the front and house the brewery in the rear. Future plans include a nice beer garden out back.

Stone Tower Joe Brewery
In May 2022, the Fairmont Times newspaper reported that local coffee roaster and restaurant, Stone Tower Joe, will expand into a much larger Fairmont building that will eventually include a small brewery.
Business co-owner Peter Daniel says they purchased the former 84 Lumber Company building, which had been closed since December 2019, because they needed space to grow. Once they get their coffee production operation, restaurant and shop up and running, he plans to develop a craft brewery there, which he notes may not be open for a couple of years. The building sits on 4 acres along Country Club Road.
Over the years at its restaurants, Stone Tower Joe has sold craft beer along side its coffee. It also commonly provides coffee beans for use in making coffee-flavored beers to WV breweries, such as High Ground Brewing in Terra Alta. If things go as planned, before long, it will be making its own beer.

Brash Brothers Brewing
A second Martinsburg area project in early stage development. One of the organizers is Rob Ciszek, who also brews at Abolitionist Brew Works in Charles Town. Organizers are currently seeking a location/building. Ciszek has been making many test batches of beer at home while getting ready to put together this project.

14th Street West Huntington Brewery
This yet-to-be-named early stage project is led by John Garcia, who currently owns and operates Lookout Brewing in Black Mountain, North Carolina. He hopes to purchase property on Huntington’s west side to develop a brewery and entertainment complex. See this article on the project announcement.

Early Stage Projects
Additional projects are hoped for in the Charleston and Huntington areas. Two early stage projects are being talked about in within Charleston city limits. All would likely be small breweries with taprooms.
The City of South Charleston would like to have a brewery and is willing to work with prospective brewery developers.
In Huntington, we hear a possible project is targeted for the future redevelopment district at the former ACF Industries property east of Marshall University. No other details have yet been announced. Peddler #2 is a Huntington project developed by Drew Hetzer, who also owns The Peddler brewpub in downtown Huntington. This project could take place at another building where Hetzer has already installed solar panels on the roof which would be used to power the equipment in the building. Initially, the facility would house the packaging and warehouse operations for the existing The Peddler brewery. Later on, a new Peddler production brewery focused on distribution could be opened in the Huntington building.
A brewery located in the Lost River area of Hardy County is rumored to be in development.
A third brewery has been rumored to be under development in Morgantown, though no additional information on it has been verified.
