Rippon Brewing begins selling beer

Rippon Brewing Company is now selling beer to a limited number of local restaurants and pubs, says Jesse Morgan, company owner. Starting out, he is only marketing two styles, a Golden Ale and an IPA, but he says more is on the way. “We will be working in some other styles to fit seasons as they come.”

Morgan is currently in the process of getting plans and approvals to open a taproom with a small restaurant at the farm brewery, which is located about six miles outside Charles Town, WV.  He hopes to have the taproom open by next summer. Once the taproom is open, he says they will begin more production with more beer styles. The brewery received its final state permits back in August.

The brewery sits on the edge of Morgan’s large Jefferson County farm. He began farming grains there around 10 years ago and is about the only farm in the state to raise malting barley. He has learned to make malt from the barley and has had success selling the malt to local distilleries. The cool thing about Rippon Brewing is Morgan’s interest in making beer with the malt he produces on the farm. Morgan says that step will take a little longer to achieve.

“We are still fine tuning equipment and recipes, so we are not currently using our own malt as of yet in the beers we are selling,” he notes. “We will soon release a stout made with a portion of our malt. More of our malt will be phased in with time.”

“We did use it in a Saison that was served for the Happy Retreat Brew Festival last month.”

Morgan is also a big supporter of other farms in his area and is already using local hops in some of his beers. “Our Golden Ale is made entirely with hops grown by our neighbor about a mile from the brewery,”  he says. West Virginia’s largest hopyard, Bullskin Hops, is located about five minutes aways from Rippon.
