Bioscience & Beer event held in Charleston

In celebration of one of the earliest examples of human-produced biotech, the West Virginia Bioscience Association held a Bio & Beer themed policy leader reception on January 27 at the Charleston Marriott.  West Virginia craft beers were served, along with other beverages and hors d’oeuvres.

The event, organized by WV Bioscience Association Executive Director Bryan Brown, highlights the potential synergies from industry groups working together. Bioscience and craft brewing are similarly positioned in the state today. Both are newer industries with the potential to create many new jobs and tax revenues. Both are leaders in helping the state transition to a new economy.

“In West Virginia we have a diverse set of folks involved in this industry,” says Brown. “Our tie-in with beer is the fact that over 10,000 years ago, when brewing techniques were invented, that was the birth of the biotech industry, so to speak.

“We consider local brewers scientists, and we appreciate what they’re doing. How could you not appreciate the growth of the craft brewing industry in West Virginia.”

Attending the event representing West Virginia’s commercial breweries was Wil Laska of Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company in Lewisburg. Laska loved getting to interact with the attendees, which included researchers, educators, and legislators.

Laska said he is happy to team with other industries in helping grow the economy.

“I hope we can continue to work together,” he says.

Bio & Beer - 1 (3)Five West Virginia-made beers were featured
  • Cold Trail Ale, Mountain State Brewing Co., Thomas
  • The Raj IPA, Charleston Brewing Company
  • Mothman Black IPA, Greenbrier Valley Brewing Co.
  • Coal City Stout, Morgantown Brewing Co.
  • Almost Heaven Amber Ale, Mountain State Brewing

Most attendees had never sampled all the beers before. It was definitely good exposure for the high quality of local beer.

You can go to business event after business event in the state and rarely see a local beer or wine featured — only national brands. We compliment the WV Bioscience Association for its foresight and its support of the local brewing industry. Let’s hope this concept spreads to all state business events. Ask for West Virginia beer; accept nothing less.
